There’s nothing more Australian than hanging out the washing on the Hills Hoist in the backyard. Admittedly in this case, the washing was a little dirty, the backyard was in Guantanamo Bay and the Hills Hoist was probably an electrified torture device, but there’s no disputing that our Australian Prime Minister comprehensively hung Australian citizen David Hicks out to dry.
To give the Poms their due, Hicks also became a British citizen while a guest in Guantanamo, but there was some confusion on that score as all the other British citizens had already left after the British government rather unpatriotically demanded that the US return them on the grounds that locking up British citizens indefinitely without charge in the name of freedom was not only ironic but also rather rude.
Fortunately, it’s not the Australian Way to stand on ceremony (ceremony being in this case terrorist concepts like habeus corpus and due process). Hicks was clearly guilty on the grounds that quite a few politicians who had insisted there were WMD in Iraq said he was, and there’s no way they’d make the same mistake twice. Anyway, who needs a court of law when you’ve got a photo of the bloke shamelessly holding a rocket launcher?
It’s only recently that George W’s little mate has started dropping a few hints that perhaps five years’ swinging in the breeze might be long enough to get even the dampest load dry and that actually it’s starting to look a bit like rain (or possibly an election).
All I can say is thank god everyone stuck to their guns, because Hicks finally confessed to “providing material support for terrorism”. Not only has this saved everyone a great deal of mucking about working out what that actually means, it’s also absolutely spot-on because being locked up by the United States without charge in flagrant disregard for the basic principles of justice has done more to damage the cause of democracy than any trouble he might have caused with that rocket launcher of his.

Jon, no one has summed up the issue more eloquently than you - pure genius! Downer appealled for us to remember Santoro is a human being after a few days of well deserved media heckling, yet they left Hicks, an Australian citizen, to rot in Guantanamo for 5 years! A clothes peg is ideal I say - this govenment is on the nose.

I’ve always wanted to see the rest of that piccy of Davo with the Rocket Launcher…. call me paranoid, but my intuition says that the people around him aren’t necessarily wearing tea towels on their heads!
I think young Davo knew something that the US need him to shut up about….
…again, no proof - just a hunch! But the same hunch that suggested Colon Powell’s Powerpoint presentation on Iraq’s mobile Nuclear Launchers was something lifted straight from the latest ‘Command & Conquer’ PC Game - and sure enough……
Keep up the good work!
